Brazil floods: At least 78 dead, more than 115,000 displaced

The death toll rose to at least 78 on Monday in Brazil, amid catastrophic flooding in the Rio Grande do Sul state. More than 115,000 people have been displaced and left without food or water amid flash flooding from storms over the last few days. Torrential downpours have also triggered landslides across the region and even resulted in the partial collapse of a dam at a small hydroelectric plant. Along with members of his federal cabinet, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva visited Rio Grande do Sul on Sunday to discuss rescue and reconstruction works with local authorities. Plus, during his weekly Sunday address at St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City, the Pope prayed for the victims, living and dead, impacted by the floods. “May the Lord welcome the dead and comfort their families and those who had to leave their homes,” Pope Francis said.
