Inside Canada’s debate on assisted dying for people with mental illness | BBC News

This story contains references to severe mental suffering which some viewers might find distressing. Germany, France and the UK are all currently debating whether medically assisted dying should be permitted, and for whom. But medical assistance in dying in Canada, also known as MAID, is already available for adults with terminal illness, or serious and chronic medical conditions. Canada has been considering for the past year whether to include eligibility for those who suffer solely from a mental illness sparking a heated debate – but this year decided to delay. The BBC follows one man considering applying for MAID, and the impact of the government’s decision. If you are suffering distress or despair and need support, you could speak to a health professional, or an organisation that offers support. Details of help available in many countries can be found at Befrienders Worldwide. www.befrienders.org In the UK details of help and support are available at bbc.co.uk/actionline #AssistedDying #BBCNews
