A U.S. Veteran & His Afghan Translator On Kabul’s Fall To The Taliban
President Biden said Monday that despite the “gut-wrenching” scenes playing out in Afghanistan following the Taliban’s return to power, he stood behind his decision to withdraw troops from the country. The nation’s quick fall to the Islamist extremist group this weekend after twenty years of U.S. forces there has spurred finger-pointing and questions about the role of the U.S. military in international affairs among American political forces. To discuss, Jim Braude was joined by two men who served in the country for years: John Velis, a Bronze star Army veteran who served two tours in Afghanistan and is now a state senator in Massachusetts; and his former translator, Alex, who spoke with Greater Boston on condition of concealing his identity due to concerns about his family’s safety.
